During Chinese Spring Festival, various parks around Beijing host ‘Miaohui – 庙会’ (temple fairs), in which many chinese gather to buy arts and crafts and try different cuisines from around China. There are also shows performed – like acrobatics and lion dances. This year I went with the Beijing Photo Walks club to Grand View Garden (‘Da Guan Yuan – in the south west of the city.

Energetic Lion Dance

The lion dancers have to be very agile.

Beijing Photo Walks is a facebook group, organised by a ex-colleague and talented photographer Nic, who meet in an area of Beijing every week to shoot an area of town. Went to a fantastic exhibition first – Beijing on the Move – which displayed really interesting photos of Beijing from around 1890 to present day. The curator Lars, one half of Beijing Postcards, gave a really great talk too, so everyone was really geared up to shoot around the Gu Luo area afterwards.

I was asked to photoshop a mate into a picture of a model for a fake relationship advice column for a well-known newspaper in Beijing. The weekly column, Ask Alessandro, was a satire, pertaining to an outdated Italian stereotype. The Wall Street Journal ran a piece on it:
The piece is so vulgar, we cannot even think of a way to summarize it for a family newspaper’s Web site – nor to provide a link to it (suffice it to say it involves an incoherent and offensive discussion of the female anatomy).
Quite a few papers and blogs picked up on the story before Ask Alessandro was pulled, never to amuse the Beijing expat readership again.
